Danielson - Moment Soakers

A few months ago I had the awesome opportunity to collaborate with my good friend Marji Fortin on an awesome project. She was in discussions with indie musician (and an all around wonderful guy) Danielson to provide an animated music video for a new single that was in the works. Luckily I harassed her enough that she agreed to let me hop on board and assist with the layouts, compositing, etc. Thusly, I present:

On rare occasion (ok, actually quite frequently) I browse the world wide web in search of fresh and new (at least to me) and bold art to oil the mechanical contraption that I consider to be my creativity. Throughout my online exploits and adventures I often stumble across a wide array of talent, and yesterday being no different, my friend Marji introduced me to the art of Mike Mac. This is a name that will become a household word in the coming years. Check him out!

In other news, I've been plodding along with some freelance work for the ever impressive Copernicus Studios, based out of balmy Halifax, Nova Scotia. I you get a chance, look up some of their work online. You won't be disappointed.

Okay, I've finally fully embraced that fact that I'm going. I've been worrying about tons of other stuff, such as selling the house, and hadn't thought too much about getting ready for it until right now. But, here's a little of what I've got planned for the con:

I'm going to be selling some mini comics: Howler Monkey Samurai and The Squid. I'm trying to get a couple of resin busts ready to sell (the chicken-man featured in this post). I also would like to take my Andre the Giant and Noir Detective maquettes to sell. I'm gonna have buttons and T-shirts and maybe some other goodies, who knows. Anyway, I'm really excited and hope to see some cool people there.

Actual this post's title is the name of the piece. I really don't have an Uncle Carl. Though, that might be cool if I did. Anyway, not much going on right now. Just plugging along with the quarter. However, I do feel need to mention Orlando's Megacon coming up the weekend of the week of Valentine's (Feb 16-18). I'm gonna be sharing a talbe with some friends from school. So, if'n you're in the neighborhood that weekend, and have some $$ to blow, go buy yourself a ticket, drop by and say "Yarr."

New section added to the site!

I promised, and I delivered! I just added a new section to my site: Resources.

I don't consider myself the most knowledgable individual to ever grace the planet, but on occasion I like to think that I can help a few other people. Thusly I've created this new section. I'll be putting rants, notes, tutorials, and other resources that I've either created or gathered in hopes of creating a virtual library. I hope a few souls will find it beneficial.

I was sifting through some stuff, and realized I never got this online! Amazing that I could do that after putting a portfolio together recently, and missing this entirely. Anyway, it was destined to be my Christmas card for the '06 season. Unfortuneatly, I didn't really get it sent out to too many people. So, if you didn't get one, I most likely meant to sent it, and find consolidation in the fact that I forgot about a lot more people than you!

My Character Design presentation is tomorrow! Hopefully it'll be a treat for anyone and everyone that comes. I've got a lot of ground to cover, and I'm way excited! This is giving me the excuse to put to paper a lot of ideas that have been floating around in my head for some time. If anybody is interested in my presentation notes, I can make those available through my website as well.

Alright. I changed the layout of the "new" site up a little bit. Definately feeling better about it now. I'm still missing some of the content, but I'll get that up soon enough, plus I plan on improving the ability to browse through the artwork, if that was bugging anybody.

New year, New site

Okay, I've had this one in the works for quite some time. But finally I've got the new site up! At least in part. I've been trying to figure out how to integrate my sketchblog into my regular dot com. It's still definately got some bugs to work through, so if you run into anything weird, let me know. I've tried playing around with layers, among other things and don't know how well this is going to work in different browsers/cross platform. So, please shoot me an email or something if you find something odd.

On another note, in addition too, coincidentally, etc, etc...
Some friends of mine have organized SHS (Students helping student) here at SCAD. They're going to be doing a series of presentations covering a variety of different art related topics. I will be doing a personal presentation this Friday on Character Design for anybody interested.

Ah. The holidays. What a great time to sit around and do absolutely nothing. In fact, it's driving me crazy! So, needless to say, I've been keeping mehself busy doing sketches, plotting for upcoming events, etc.

I have this insane infatuation with trying to make things to sell to people. Sometimes these "flings" fly, sometimes they tank. Right now, however, I'm considering doing a couple of busts. I'll later cast them in resin, possbily impregnated with marble dust to simulate that genuinality that some find intriguing. Hmm... (strokes mustache). I'm considering a Presidents of the United States line... If anybody reads this ever, lemme know how that sounds.

Seriously. I'm beginning to think that I'm starting a new "I'm never ever ever going to update my blog" trend! For that, I sincerely apologize, although I'll probably do it again. I just need to convince myself to at least put up schtuffs that I've been tinkering with on a weekly basis (at the very least).

Anyway, it's not that I haven't been producing art. In fact, I've had an insanely crazy and busy quarter. A lot of the stuff I've done I simply can't post - given the nature of the project. Very top-secretive. But, here's a little taste of what I've been working on. You might remember the little red-headed kid from an earlier post. I'm revisiting an old idea and trying to bring it to fruition. I've got turnarounds, layout designs, etc that I'll be posting ASAP.

Mutant Babies and the Grande Pumba

It's certainly been a while since I posted last. So, I guess I'll bring y'all up to date! Recently got back from a nice long 19-state road trip. We went from Savannah to Fayetteville, NC for a friend's wedding. Then headed north to visit a buddy in Chicago. Then to Wisconsin to visit a dentist that really hooked us up. From there we shot due west to Idaho to hang with my family for a week or so. Then the car broke down in Ogden, UT. Then we spent a day in Greeley Colorado with my in-laws and then a day in Castle Rock, CO with my sister, finally heading back to Savannah for school. Whoof!

Anyway, I recently sculpted a movie prop for a low-budget horror flick being filmed near Savannah. It was a mutated, two-headed (and lifesize) baby floating in a specimen jar. Was a great experience with very little pay. The next couple of images are the next maquette that I will execute - the Grande Pumba!

Spiderman, a communist?

Not really. I just was thinking to myself, it would be funny to take the superhero that represents Americana at it's heart, and portray him via Russian Avant Garde-ism. Also, this was part of a digital illustration assignment where we were supposed to do a mock cover for a Spiderman issue. So, yeah.

Also, the moment of truth has come. The commission that I have been slaving over is finally in the oven. Literally.

Mariner sketch and various other oddities

Here's what ended up happening with the sketch of the mariner that was in an earlier post. My chum, Dove McHarge (an amazing artist!), puts together this quarterly mini-anthology that has a nautical theme. It's called Cannon (as per the second image, cover by Julie Collins-Rousseau), and I suggest you check it out. They're self published (seriously, the guy's a genius) and only a couple of bucks. So if'n yer hankerin' ta sinks yer teeths into some piratey goodness, whalish nonsense or a blast from Captain Nemo's past, this is the publication to do it....in....er...with. Whatever.

Seriously.

On another note, I was commissioned to do a series of horror genre illustrations for some strange card game coming out soon. I still have no idea what it's all about... The only thing that really bugs me about the illustrations is the fact that the client was VERY ADAMANT about the background being white. And me, being the goober that I am, accidentally flattened the final illustrations in photoshop, thus effectively locking in all that whiteness. Doggone!

8 pages of Wolf Boy

A little something that's been in the brewing pot for quite a while. Originally I began conceptualizing the idea back in Idaho, years ago. The original concept began as an idea for a "video game," but has been the subject of animation studies and now 8 pages of sequential art.

The above pages are %100 mine - and actually my first attempt at inking with a brush (with which I'm in love!)

Max Starwind

I had a digital design class that was really fun last quarter. I'm sure I'll posting some more of that stuff here soon as well. But, one of the project revolved around a character that the teacher had created, Max Starwind. We had to create character designs, etc for an "up and coming main stream comic." I opted to make Max a kid, as if conceptualizing for a kids animated series. So, I created a poster, boys underpants, and other things. Also, I included a robot design that went of the actual bloomers, themselves. All the work is 100% Adobe Illustrator - simply one of the greatest gifts given to man!

I've got nothing I'm really drawing at the moment. I'm currently working on this commission that is totally sucking up every bit 'o' time I have. Maybe I'll get to post it up a little later. We'll see. Anyway, here's some stuff I had done over the last few months. They mainly represent a stylistic exploration. I've been really into the UPA style retro toon stuff (albeit heavily mixed with my own style) and gauche quality painting. So I've been whipping these up between illustrator and Corel Painter IX. Fun stuff. Also, the last one is unfinished, since it was for a commission that got an overhaul, so the subject of the illustration became unneccessary. I dunno, maybe I'll finish it one of these days...

The Squid - SCAD Science Anthology

Starting two years ago, SCAD's sequential art department has been doing an annual themed comic anthology, distributed by Top Shelf. This last one was was a science theme and is packed full of some really good stuff. My own story, featured above took second place in the book, and I won me a little bit 'o' $$!
